I haven’t written a work post for a very long time. I’ve just been bumbling along for quite a while with no major events beyond the usual daily or weekly frustrations of my team.

Anyway, a thing happened today.

First, let’s back up for some history. I happened to edit a particular “career path” form at the end of last year, during a period where anyone who made edits was automatically entered into a competition to be mentored by someone on the executive team for the geo.

Well, someone from HR had hinted that I was on the short list a few weeks ago.

Today, instead of going to the monthly (boring, snore-fest) work community update (which I usually avoid anyway) I had a chat with the boys while himself made their lunch and then got on with some work. When the meeting finished a lovely colleague in support messaged me congratulations.

I was surprised.

Apparently, I got past the shortlist and I’m one of 15 people selected to spend 9 months being mentored by someone from the executive team.

I have no idea what to expect, no idea what I’m doing! I’m going to go into the process with an open mind and no expectations. I have been quite annoyed with things lately and I’d like to make a change in what I do, I even have an idea of a specific role I’d like to perform (that doesn’t even exist). So maybe its perfect timing! On the other hand, my imposter syndrome is running riot too.

  14. What great news … and during a time when work and work roles have been changing so dramatically, it comes at a great time. If you go in hungry for knowledge, guidance, and advice, and aren’t afraid to ask questions — even the ones you think might be stupid (they aren’t) — you can’t go wrong. Hooray!

  17. Make sure you have objectives/intentions about what you want out of the relationship and time together. And 2 to 3 questions that you have for your mentor on the first meeting. This will help keep you focused and let your mentor know what you need from them. Congratulations!

  21. Congratulations!! I always found being a mentee much easier than being a mentor. At least, there’s less pressure. Just gotta keep an open mind and learn as much as possible from them.
