A huge thank you to Emma at Invincible Woman on Wheels for nominating me all the way back in September 2020. I’m so sorry its taken me so very long to respond. I don’t have a good excuse, I’ve been “getting round to it” for ages and I’m now writing this with small boy sitting on my knee, between me and the laptop so even now I can’t quite see what I’m doing.

Emma’s blog is fantastic. As you probably know, I feel strongly about diversity and inclusion, so I find Invincible Woman on Wheels a great way of broadening my own horizons and helping me to see the world from someone else’s perspective.

Three Things You May Not Know About Me

I have a PhD in proper wet messy stinky chemistry. I spent three years in a university lab slaving away with separating funnels, Buchner filters, silica chromatography, columns and Schlenk lines, making mostly yellow powders with the occasional bright green/red dichroic crystals.

Himself says I’m married to “one of the best scientists in the world in his field, and one of the most modest”.

I didn’t pass my driving test until I was 24, having failed 4 times previously (three times when I was 18 and then once more just before passing). I managed to write off my 4×4 (when sleep deprived by small boy’s age 1 midnight antics), on a bright clear morning on an empty road by driving into a lamp post at 5 miles an hour and not even setting off the air bag. Himself and the boys will never let me live that down.

Emma’s Questions

1. Why did you start blogging?

I blog to let out the random thoughts that wander through my head. Initially, and still, I used it as a sort of free therapy after we lost baby boy3 when I was 20 weeks pregnant in January 2019. I wanted to have a safe place where I could talk about how I’m feeling without worrying that people would start to think that I’m still going on about loss and grief. My close friends aren’t like that, but having an anonymous outlet allows me to speak honestly.

2. What would you consider your ‘golden’ best moment in blogging?

I was pretty amazed to be recognised by the blogging community for various blogging awards. Getting included in one of Bill’s weekly round ups over on A Silly Place is always awesome, and my only ever blogging perk of reviewing a canvas was very cool.

Something that I loved writing and I’m proud of is a post about the Inspirational women in my life.

3. What do you consider your ‘gold medal’ top goal with blogging?

A free 5 star all inclusive holiday in exchange for a review would be pretty awesome!

But seriously, if anything I write resonates with someone, makes them feel just a little bit like they aren’t alone and we share something, that is just all I can hope for.

4. What’s 1 tv series you would recommend?

I loved Scandal. I have watched all of Greys Anatomy and I think Shonda Rimes is fantastic. Scandal is just sexy and dramatic and I love the empowerment of the lead character.

5. What’s 1 band/artist you would recommend?

I’ve recently discovered a band called Sault, I’ve been listening to them when I run and they have great beat. I’d highly recommend their song called Wildfires.

My Nominees

The Other Mrs Fields

I “met” Amber through a mum’s blog promotion group on Facebook. Her blog is fabulous and she’s just genuine and engaging.

The Grumpy Olive

Simona, Frederica and Cristina are sisters who write such a beautiful blog. They write about all sorts of things, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest.

Love Rosiee

Rosie is such a sweet supporter, she’s generous with her comments and so thoughtful. Her blog is just lovely to even look at before you start reading. She’s someone I feel I’d like a lot if ever we met.

Jasperden Health

Rachel is someone else who has become one of my favourite people in the blogging world. I was lucky enough to have her contribute a piece to my lessons in loss series – her writing is just so honest and heartfelt, I want to hug her.

Echoes of Em

Em’s blog is a bit eclectic like mine. I love the contrast between thoughtful pieces that are insightful and well considered, against practical posts on plants and crafts.

My Questions

  1. Sunrise or sunset and why?
  2. What book has had a lasting effect on you and your life?
  3. Why do you keep blogging, what’s its value for you?
  4. What cruel and unusual punishment would you like to exact on the evilest of evil people?
  5. What’s your last thought as you go to sleep at night?

Some of my Favourite Posts

The writing I’m most proud of is probably the little bit of creative writing that I’ve done:

Other than those, my post on Inclusion is something that I try to share quite frequently – not because its amazing but just because its an important topic.

Lastly, I’d like to mention my take on how everyone’s reaction to our grief can help us: Reaction to loss: It takes all sorts.

Love from Smell xx

  1. Congratrulations! I’m actually doing a minor in food chemistry right now, but I’m not sure about doing a PhD 😅. Great post!

  2. Oh yikes, you wrote off a 4×4 at 5mph? That’s impressive! No injuries though, right? I hope not, otherwise I’ll feel bad for chuckling 😂

Congrats on the very well-deserved award. This is the first I’ve seen on the Golden Bloggerz Award actually, and I like the questions. I’ll have to check out some of the bloggers you’ve nominated here too as they’re new to me.

I’ve tried to watch Scandal recently but I don’t think I was in the right frame of mind, didn’t have enough brain cells going for the first episode as was required. I used to really like Greys Anatomy. I seem to be watching a lot of newer medical series now too, like Code Black and The Resident – both definitely recommended if you’re in need of something new to check out in future.

    1. Haven’t heard of Code Black or The Resident, or maybe I have the Resident, not seen them though and I love a medical drama. I started watching something set in Chicago at some point and I love New Amsterdam too, oh and The Good Doctor. Yeah, definitely my thing!
