Interviewing my kids

I saw a post by Damion at The Northern Dad where he interviewed his kids. I’ve always liked those Facebook Q&A posts to see what funny things our kids say, so I asked and Damion kindly allowed me to steal his idea.

The Interview Process

We were sitting around the kitchen table, the boys eating breakfast (best way to keep them in one place for long enough to answer questions) and me absorbing my second coffee of the day. Small boy was in full on comedian mode and large boy equal parts serious, flippant and sweet.

The Candidates

Large boy: He’s nine now, growing out of his little-boyness. Inquisitive, a fountain of random facts, occasionally grumpy and kind and tender. He loves Roblox and has just discovered Fornite, is learning to code with Scratch but still sleeps with his favourite teddies.

Small boy: At five and a half he’s just discovering the world, he’s always been full of mischief and laughter, he cries easily and adores his brother. He loves Lego and playing with himself’s Scalextric, biking as far as possible and says he’ll never be too big to sit on my knee.

The Questions

Some of these were Damion’s because they were so good, some I added and some the boys asked each other.

What do you like most about yourself?

Large boy: that I can read and I have lots of books

Small boy: that I have eyes

What do you want to do for a job?

Large boy: robotics engineer

Small boy: a video game tester

What’s something Mum says all the time?

Large boy: come do this or that

Small boy: eat up (this is very true, he’s a slow eater)

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever done?

Large boy: wear my friend at school’s glasses

Small boy: making noisy farts

How will the world be different when you’re grown up?

Large boy: there will be better robots because I’m going to design them

Small boy: I won’t live with mum and dad anymore and that’s sad

What’s your favourite way to spend a day?

Large boy: play Roblox all day

Small boy: play Transformers

What do Mum and Dad do all day?

Large boy: work and do household jobs and eat snacks

Small boy: watch TV ha haa

What scares you?

Large boy: having Switch and tablet taken away

Small boy: being sick

What can you teach me?

Large boy: how to do impossible knots

Small boy: how to play some games on the Switch

What’s your favourite TV show? and mine?

Large boy: Sugar Rush is mine and yours is Vikings

Small boy: I don’t have a favourite and yours is war movies

What is it important for everyone to be?

Large boy: an elephant (he’s had more sensible answers in the past)

Small boy: kind

What must you not do?

Large boy: swear and sneak downstairs and eat all the cake and be unkind

Small boy: read all the advent activities

If you had three wishes what would they be?

Large boy: For made up animals to be real, for baby to still be alive and for everyone I love to have riches.

Small boy: Real made up animals, a giant hexbug bus that I can ride and that it’s always Christmas and we always get presents.

What do you do when you feel sad?

Large boy: play games with my friends or tell you, Mum

Small boy: tell a grown up

What do you do when someone else feels sad?

Large boy: help them, play with them

Small boy: play floor is lava with them

What are you grateful for?

Large boy: that all my family is healthy and no one is sick

Small boy: my presents from Santa

What is your favourite book?

Large boy: anything by Cressida Cowell

Small boy: I love Dick King-Smith

What would you like to ask me?

Large boy: why don’t you like it when I sing “it’s raining tacos”?

Small boy: what animal do you like best?

My Answers

Why don’t you like it when I sing “it’s raining tacos”?

Me: Because I’ve heard it about 3 million times and there are so many better songs out there that I know you like too.

What animal do you like best?

Me: shall I say pandas just to annoy Daddy? (Himself is notoriously not a fan of pandas, he says that a disproportionately huge amount of money is spent trying to save them from extinction when they clearly don’t want to be saved.)

Small boy: ha ha ha ha yes!

Thank you and we’ll let you know

The boys gave some very silly answers there, but some lovely ones too. Its always amusing to see things from their points of view, they’re totally wrong about how himself and I spend our days but sadly correct about what I say all the time. Oh dear.

Well, I think I’ll give them both the job of being my kids, I couldn’t wish for better.

If you had to interview your kids, what questions would you dare to ask them? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I just love this. What a great idea for a post to interview your children and see the varying answers you get. Even though the answers are different, the essence is the same showing the pure kind hearted and innocence of children at their core

  2. That’s brilliant. There’s some great caring answers in there, as well as some classic ‘kid’ comedy ones. I always do a birthday interview with N and it’s great to hear how the answers change

  3. Cute answers 🙂 I don’t have kids yet, but I feel like doing this with my boyfriend.

  4. I really love this! I’d love to play this with my kids, but currently only 1 out of 3 children will tolerate me. So feel free to send gin and ridiculous amounts of cake!

The panda thing… Totes get it!

  5. Ahhhh… the simple beauty of a child’s mind 🙂 So fun reading their impulsive thoughts & honest answers on each matter!
Let’s see… another fun question could be “if you could be someone (or something) for a day, who/what would you be & why?”
