This is just to say
I have eaten
all the cherries
that were in
the fridge
and which
I was probably
saving
for the weekend
But
they were delicious
so sweet
and so yummy

I used to teach a lesson on this, then move onto Post It note poetry – kids writing poems like ‘This is just to say…’
They always enjoyed it.

Bravo! Bravo!
I had an English professor in college who was very into poetry and always wanted us to find the deeper meaning of it, and although we got along fabulously well, I know it always annoyed her that my answer to “What is poetry?” was “Whatever you say it is” and that my favorite poet was William Carlos Williams because his poems weren’t complicated.
